Miller back in limelight and bound for Glory
A few years ago, that was a familiar back page headline as Liam Miller sprang to prominence, first with Glasgow Celtic and then Manchester United, but now it’s the Australian media who are devoting column inches to the Cork-bornmidfielder ahead of tomorrow’s A-League Grand Final between Perth Glory and Brisbane Roar.
After failing to make a lasting impression at Old Trafford and later falling out with Roy Keane at Sunderland, Miller played two seasons for Hibs in the SPL before transferring to Perth last summer.
Capped 21 times for his country, the now 30-year-old might still have been in contention for this summer’s European Championships had his career taken a different course.
Instead, he’s hoping to overcome a hamstring injury and help Perth to claim the spoils at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.
Certainly, Perth Glory coach Ian Ferguson is anxious to have the club’s influential midfielder in starting line-up for tomorrow’s big game. “Liam Miller has come back and the scans have been great,” he said. “There’s no tear or anything, no strain, so hopefully he should take his place. He is too important a player to leave out. It’s a gamble we’ll have to take, but I’m sure he’s going to be okay. It’s not too much of a gamble.”
A 50,000 crowd and a million-strong tv audience are expected to watch the Australian showpiece.
