Anthony Gerrard aims to boost his hopes of a first senior Republic of Ireland call-up with a big display in the Carling Cup final.

Gerrard aiming to impress Trap

The Cardiff City defender goes head-to-head with cousin Steven of Liverpool at Wembley tomorrow. He has represented Ireland at U18 level after qualifying through his grandmother and says he is ready to make the step up to Giovanni Trapattoni’s squad in time for Euro 2012.

“Every player wants to play at international level and I’m no different,” said Gerrard.

“A lot of people probably don’t know that I am eligible to play for the Republic of Ireland, having played for them at U18 level. I pledged my allegiance to the Republic and I would love the chance to play for the senior squad.

“I have yet to receive a call-up to the senior squad, but I hope my recent performances are being noted by people on the coaching staff.”

On tomorrow’s clash with Liverpool, he said: “It will be a bittersweet day for the family. Steven’s got too many winners medals and this is my chance. Hopefully, I’ll be the one who comes away with the winner’s medal.”
