Kalou on mark as Ivorians coast into last eight

Salomon Kalou’s early goal helped Ivory Coast book their spot in the African Nations Cup quarter-finals and consign opponents Burkina Faso to an early exit.

The Chelsea striker opened the scoring after 16 minutes and a late own-goal from Bakary Kone sealed the victory as the tournament favourites, having beaten Sudan in their opening match, guaranteed themselves a top-two finish in Group B.

Earlier, Sudan twice fought back from a goal down against Angola to claim their first point of the competition.

Mohamed Bashir’s brace cancelled out two goals from in-form Angola striker Manucho as the spoils were shared in an entertaining clash.

The result leaves Sudan with one point, having lost their opening game to Ivory Coast 1-0 while Angola move onto four points, having beaten Burkina Faso 2-1 in their first outing.
