Staunton Dundalk bound?
The former Republic of Ireland manager and player, currently filling a scouting role for Sunderland, is due to be interviewed for the position at his hometown club today.
The Lilywhites are seeking a replacement for Ian Foster whose contract with the club was not renewed at the end of October.
And Staunton is not the only former Boy in Green who has expressed an interest in a managerial role in the Airtricity League of Ireland .
As Michael O’Neill prepares to be interviewed for the vacant post of Northern Ireland manager, two former Republic of Ireland internationals — Jason McAteer and David Kelly — have thrown their hats into the ring to be his successor at league champions Shamrock Rovers.
“I have managerial ambitions and I am confident my ambitions could match those of Rovers,” said Kelly, who has worked as a number two to Billy Davies at Sheffield United, Preston, Derby County and Nottingham Forest.
And McAteer too is keen to cut his managerial teeth in the domestic league.
“I worked for a brief spell as John Barnes’ number two at Tranmere and I coached there with Brian Little but I want to be a manager in my own right,” said the former Liverpool man.
