Delaney gets FAI go-ahead to complete new Trap deal

THE FAI’s board of management has given approval to its chief executive John Delaney to press ahead with negotiations on a new contract for Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni.

The board go-ahead allows Delaney to proceed with planned talks with businessman Denis O’Brien on the part-financing of a new two-year deal for Trapattoni. If O’Brien, as expected, agrees to continue his support for the Italian, negotiations will commence immediately. Sources say it is in everyone’s interest to have the terms agreed in advance of the December 2 draw for Euro 2012 in Kiev, which will be attended by both Trapattoni and Delaney.

Some concerns were raised at yesterday’s board meeting regarding terms and structure of Trapattoni’s contract, which is among the highest in Europe. Board members stressed the need, at a time of financial strain on the Association, to reduce his salary going forward to the next World Cup qualifying campaign. Trapattoni is reputedly on a deal worth up to €1.7m a year. That restructure could mean that the Italian management team may be offered a considerably lower salary but with lucrative incentives built into for qualifying for Brazil 2014.

Board members lauded the Republic of Ireland manager for securing qualification to the Euro 2012 finals, Ireland’s first appearance at a major tournament in a decade, though there was some dissatisfaction expressed at his cautious tactical approach.
