Look of the Irish
Alan Judge: The former Blackburn winger was on the scoresheet as Notts County maintained their impressive start to the League One season with a 3-1 win at Chesterfield. Notts County were leading 1-0 when Judge rolled home their second seven minutes before half-time. Teammate Krystian Pearce said: ‘‘His ability on the ball is unquestionable, so it was just a matter of time before he got his first goal and hopefully now he’ll take off from there and get a few more.”
Conor Hourihane: The 20-year-old Corkman grabbed a glorious goal as League Two basement club Plymouth picked up a vital three points after a thrilling 3-2 win at Dagenham & Redbridge. Hourihane showed no ill-effects for a head wound sustained in the first half when he lashed home a stunning volley after 52 minutes. He told his Twitter page: ‘‘I won’t score a better goal again.’’ He might well be right.
Andy Reid: A few years ago this man’s name was mentioned at just about Ireland press conference and his absence from the international scene was subject to regular and at times hysterical criticism. Since then, Reid’s career has gone south at a rate of knots and on Saturday he was unable to get into Nottingham Forest’s starting team for the trip to Coventry, a game they lost 1-0. Reid came on as an injury-time substitute.
Simon Cox: An enterprising and impressive display on the international scene last week wasn’t enough to earn the striker a starting spot in West Brom’s game with Wolves yesterday. Roy Hodgson opted for just one up front with Shane Long, who Cox had started ahead of against Armenia, getting the nod. Cox was left to reflect on an unusual situation that has him ahead of his teammate for his country but behind him at club level.
Cillian Sheridan: The striker has started the season in fine form but he lasted only 20 minutes in St Johnstone’s 2-0 win over Inverness before an injury forced him off the pitch. Sheridan had played a part in the build-up to St Johnstone’s first goal.
Jay Tabb: The former Ireland U21 star was knocked unconscious after he was struck in the face by the ball in Reading’s 1-0 win at Burnley. Tabb was taken to hospital but later discharged. Royals boss Brian McDermott revealed: ‘It was worrying because it was a hell of a whack.’’
