Waterford pile on the misery for Wexford

WEXFORD YOUTHS are still seeking their first home win of the season as two late goals earned Waterford the points at Ferrycarrig Park.

Waterford pile on the misery for Wexford

Wexford started brightly and after just 90 seconds a low Danny Furlong shot brought a fine save out of visiting keeper Kevin Burns.

Soon after, Burns misjudged a Walshe header which was cleared off the line by Paul Phelan. He then dropped a Shane Dempsey corner, leaving Ben Ryan to hook the ball towards goal but John Hayes managed to save the keeper’s blushes.

Waterford showed more urgency after these scares with Willie John Kiely turning a Phelan cross just wide.

Nine minutes into the second half, a Kenny Browne deflection off a Dean Broaders cross rebounded off his own crossbar. The visitors were enjoying a dominant spell as Phelan forced a superb 68th-minute save out of Holden but, with five minutes left, disaster struck the home side. A Brian Nolan cross was headed against his own bar by Martin Kehoe with Paul Phelan heading home the rebound. A minute later Phelan had a shot beaten away by Holden only for Kiely to steer home the rebound. Holden was sent off for protesting, having been booked earlier.
