Calderwood ‘excited’ by possible Hughton reunion

HIBERNIAN manager Colin Calderwood last night admitted the possibility of joining Chris Hughton as assistant at Birmingham is “exciting”, casting doubt on his role at Easter Road.

Calderwood was assistant to Hughton at Newcastle, helping the Magpies to promotion to the Premier League, before taking control at Easter Road last October.

However, his family remain in England and speculation has mounted that Hughton — appointed Birmingham boss this week — would like to make the former Scotland international his number two at St Andrew’s.

Calderwood said: “I can’t sit here and say categorically there’s nothing that would excite me elsewhere. But my job at the minute is to be here.”

Meanwhile, Hibs’ Garry O’Connor, who Calderwood signed on a one-year deal this summer, has been formally charged after being arrested in a drugs raid in May and will now go to trial.

The Scottish forward is said to have been found with cocaine in a police raid in May and is expected to face a trial in Edinburgh.

Hibs have endured a fraught week after an alleged training ground bust up between Martin Scott and Sean Welsh left Welsh with a fractured cheekbone.
