Wexford shock Derry

DANNY FURLONG’S superb hat-trick helped rekindle lowly Wexford Youths’ season as they produced one of the shocks of the round, totally outplaying Premier Division side Derry at Ferrycarrig Park last night.

Wexford took a shock 31st-minute lead when Kevin Rowe played a delightful ball through for Furlong to cooly slot low past keeper Gerard Doherty.

While Derry City had more of the possession, they were further rocked two minutes into additional time when Barry Molloy was adjudged to have taken down Dean Broaders after a fine run, leaving Danny Furlong to slot home the penalty.

Both Lafferty and Furlong went close before the home side struck for their third goal after 70 minutes.

Darragh Walshe played a one-two with Furlong, whose shot took a deflection and looped into the net over keeper Doherty.

Furlong went on to complete his hat-trick from close range eight minutes from the end.

Sub Eamon Zayed scored a consolation goal for Derry two minutes into injury time.
