Green’s screamer steals win for Sligo
It was another substitute Raffaele Cretaro who created the chance. He, like Green, joined Sligo from Bohs. He played a superb cross in behind the defence before Green’s first-time shot screamed high into the net.
Making matters worse for Stephen Kenny’s new look side was the fact Derry squandered a first-half penalty when Sligo keeper Brendan Clarke denied new Derry man, Eamon Zayed.
The visitors impressed early on but on 30 minutes Sligo almost got the opener. Jason McGuinness got his head to the ball which struck the crossbar before it was whipped to safety.
Three minutes later the visitors hit the woodwork again when a low shot from Danny Ventre crashed off of the upright, with Gerard Doherty, beaten.
In the 35th minute, Derry went close when Zayed played McGlynn in but his shot screamed wide.
And just before the break the home side had a superb chance to break the deadlock when awarded a penalty. McGuinness was adjudged to have clipped McGlynn inside the area but Zayed’s spot-kick was parried by Clarke before McGlynn flashed the rebound over the crossbar.
Sligo maintained the impetus in the early stages of the second half when Mathew Blinkhorn had a shot saved by Doherty in the 56th minute. Back came Derry, with Clarke pulling off a great save to deny Danny Lafferty in the 68th minute. But it was Green who snatched the win for Sligo.
