LA Galaxy set to pave way for Beckham’s Spurs switch

LOS ANGELES GALAXY are open to David Beckham’s loan move to the Premier League.

LA Galaxy set to pave way for Beckham’s Spurs switch

Tottenham are the firm favourites to sign the ex-England captain, who is believed to be relaxed about whether he plays competitive matches or trains.

The terms of a move, including image rights and insurance against injury, are still being negotiated. If a deal is agreed, Beckham, 35, could play up to 11 games before the Major League Soccer season starts in March.

Several Premier League clubs have expressed an interest in taking Beckham on loan, but Spurs, where he trained as a boy, remain the most likely option.

If an agreement can be reached quickly, Beckham could join up with Tottenham ahead of their FA Cup clash with Charlton on Sunday. And he could face former club Manchester United in the Premier League on January 16.

The midfielder, whose main English home is in nearby Hertfordshire, trained with Tottenham before signing schoolboy forms with the Red Devils in 1991.

“Spurs are one of many clubs interested — but we have not yet had detailed talks,” said a spokesman for Beckham.

“At the moment we are waiting on the decision of LA Galaxy with regards to a loan move. The loan would be a short one until the start of the MLS season. David would then return and play a full season with the Galaxy.

“The loan is part of David’s desire to keep fit and make himself available for England again.”

However, Beckham may ultimately only train with an English side ahead of his return to the United States in time for the Galaxy’s first match of the season against the Seattle Sounders on March 15.

In January 2008 he worked out with the Arsenal squad at their London Colney headquarters to keep fit during the MLS close season.

Blackburn boss Steve Kean said on Monday that Rovers would also be interested in Beckham, but Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has conceded his hopes of bringing the player to St James’ Park are unlikely to be realised.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp revealed he first became aware of Beckham’s interest via his son Jamie, a former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder.

“He spoke to Jamie, that’s how it all came about,” said Redknapp Sr. “He said ‘I’d like to come back and I fancy playing for Spurs because I like the way they play’.”
