GIOVANNI TRAPATTONI remained in hospital in Dublin overnight after falling ill at the Irish team hotel on Sunday.

Although the FAI described his condition as “stable and not serious” following what appeared to be a severe case of food poisoning, there is now real doubt about the 71-year-old Italian being able to take charge of the Irish team against Argentina for tonight’s first football international at the Aviva Stadium.

In a statement yesterday, the FAI said that Trapattoni, who had been taken to the Mater Hospital in the small hours of Tuesday morning, “underwent a number of tests and all of those test results are normal to date’’.
