With Wayne Rooney boarding the flight back to Munich yesterday afternoon still wearing the protective boot around his right foot that saw him leave the Allianz Arena on crutches on Tuesday night, it appears inevitable the England star will miss Saturday’s crunch clash with Chelsea.

As the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final with Bayern Munich follows just four days later, Rooney probably will not be involved in that either, and he could be out for much longer once the results of a scan due in the next 24 hours are known.
