Hands off Doyle, warns Big Mick
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger waxed lyrically about the Wexford-born striker when he was commentating in Paris for French TV on the France-Ireland World Cup qualifier.
But Wenger and the other Premier League managers have been told in no uncertain terms that the former Cork City striker is going nowhere in January.
“I hope he scores another four or five between now and then and there will be loads of interest because he is not going anywhere,” said the former Ireland boss about his 26-year-old striker.
“It wouldn’t matter if there was interest because I would like to get some more in – I’m not going to lose one of my best ones. No chance.”
Unfortunately for Wolves, Doyle was injured on the pre-season tour of Australia but since his return he has worked tirelessly up front for Wanderers.
“Doyley has been brilliant,” McCarthy beamed.
“His all-round performance has been great but he will be judged on goals. He has got four now.
“If he can get 10 goals for us in the season, that would be brilliant as there wasn’t too many that got 10 last season.”
McCarthy will not field the same team that did so well to defend a 1-0 lead for 87 minutes for victory at Spurs on Saturday. He said: “I’ll make a couple of changes, Dave Edwards is injured and a couple were really leggy at the end of the game and I will see how they are.”
McCarthy has had to put up with as many injury woes as his counterpart Alex Ferguson but was delighted to welcome back Ireland right-back Kevin Foley on Saturday. Ireland striker Andy Keogh will have ankle surgery today and is expected to be out for three months. And McCarthy dismissed talk of a good time to visit Old Trafford after United’s loss to Villa on Saturday.
“When was the last time United lost two on the bounce?
“They must be rubbing their hands together to be playing Wolves at home.
“Let me tell you what they must be like: ‘Wolves are coming up here, we’ve just been beat by Villa. Now is the chance to get back on track. Let’s slap these insolent little sods from the Black Country – we are going to give them the biggest doing they have ever had.’”
“But whoever plays we are not giving up,” he said.
