Ferguson eyeing next stage
United maintained their 100% record in Group B after Antonio Valencia struck a late goal to secure a 1-0 win in the Russian capital yesterday evening. With three games still remaining, Ferguson hopes his side can now secure their passage with something to spare.
Ferguson said: âWe are very pleased with our performance. The situation in the group is now nine points. I have always maintained that you need 10 to qualify.
âWe now have a home game against CSKA in two or three weeksâ time which we hope can take us to the next stage.â
Unitedâs win meant they equalled Ajaxâs Champions League record of 14 away games unbeaten and Ferguson said the team should be proud of the milestone.
âI think we should be proud of it,ââ he said. âItâs not easy away from Europe because weâve been to some fantastic places over the years.
âMaturity â there is a way you play in Europe away from home and I think you saw tonight we showed good patience in the game and kept good possession, I think thatâs a key factor.ââ
The United boss felt his team had produced a professional performance on the Luzhniki Stadiumâs artificial pitch.
He added: âIn the first half I think we played with a lot patience, which is necessary when you are playing away from home.
âExperience in these sort of situations is always vital. In the second half I think we increased the tempo of the game and got more penetration.
âWe created some good goal opportunities and if we have to wait to the 86th minute, so be it.
âWe had to have the patience to win, and we did that.â He added: âThe issues of the surface were not a problem. As I said before the game, good footballers can play on that easily.ââ
Ferguson expressed his satisfaction with the performance of Valencia, who moments before his goal had rattled the crossbar. It was Valenciaâs second goal for the club, following on quickly from his first in last weekendâs win over Bolton.
Ferguson said of the Ecuador international: âHe has been the plus point for the last two weeks.
âHe is settling into the club, his confidence is stronger and he has tremendous assets for a wee player.
âThe area he hadnât shown was goalscoring ability. We said when we signed him this was his challenge to progress as a footballer.
âNow he has scored two in two games and that will help him.â
Ferguson confirmed his decision to substitute Rio Ferdinand just before the hour was merely precautionary ahead of Sundayâs Premier League trip to rivals Liverpool. United had already travelled to Russia without the likes of Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, Patrice Evra, Darren Fletcher and Park Ji-Sung.
Fabio put in an impressive display at left-back for United, and although he went off in the dying minutes with an injury, Ferguson says it is not serious.
He said: âHe was absolutely outstanding. The boy is a magnificent player for 18-years-of-age, absolutely first class. Itâs just cramp, all heâs got is cramp, heâs okay.ââ
Defeat left CSKA Moscow with three points from their opening three games in the competition but new manager Juande Ramos remains hopeful of progress.
Ramos, the former Tottenham manager who took charge last month, said: âWe had our chances but we didnât take them.
âI think we had a very good first half and in the second half we had chances in the first 10 minutes.
âWe made it very hard for them for an hour. We have lost but we still have three games and we are going to fight for our chances.â
Subs for CSKA Moscow: Mamaev for Shchennikov 62, Piliev for Necid 73, Carvalho for Rahimic
Subs for Man United: Brown for Ferdinand 57, Owen for Scholes, Carrick for Fabio 88.
