THE players at Cork City have been asked to accept a deal that will see their pay phased out over a “slightly extended period”.

Cork City players asked to accept ‘slightly extended’ pay proposal

The troubled League of Ireland Premier Division club, which narrowly avoided liquidation just over four weeks ago, has pledged that the players will be “paid in full” but while they have been holding out for the situation to be sorted out by December at the latest, the club is understood to be keen to push that deadline out to January.

If no agreement is reached on the matter, the players are believed to be keen to begin an all-out strike, something which had been a possibility prior to their Setanta Cup victory over Cliftonville last Saturday. But they were advised against this by PFAI secretary, Stephen McGuinness.

Most of the Cork City players have received just 20% of the wages owed to them for the month of August.

“Cork City Football Club wish to confirm that they are in negotiation with all staff with a view to paying everybody in full as per their contracts,” read a statement yesterday.

“While a great many businesses are implementing pay cuts at this time, (the club wishes) to honour all existing obligations to the end of the season.

“This is only possible by phasing the payments over a slightly extended period. The club has issued a written proposal to the players and we are awaiting their response.

“The club appreciates the efforts being made by all stakeholders during these difficult times and firmly believes that these difficulties can be overcome through the continued cooperation of all concerned.

“At this time our primary focus is on securing European qualification, starting with Friday night’s game against Galway United at Turner’s Cross.”

The club will also host Celtic next Wednesday in what is hoped will be a lucrative gate at Turner’s Cross.
