Pool trounce Latics to add to pressure on Martinez

NEW Wigan manager Roberto Martinez is enduring a baptism of fire in his first few weeks in the job.

Pool trounce Latics to add to pressure on Martinez

The Spaniard saw his much-changed side ripped apart 4-1 by Championship side Blackpool in the second round of the Carling Cup.

Martinez shook things up following successive defeats by Wolves and Manchester United but his fringe players failed to deliver.

Blackpool took the lead after three minutes through Ishmel Demontagnac.

They were 3-0 ahead at half-time with Ben Burgess and Charlie Adam also on target. Substitute Gary Taylor-Fletcher grabbed a fourth in the second period.

Wigan grabbed a consolation goal in stoppage time when Antonio Amaya marked his debut by heading in Ben Watson’s corner.

Simon Cox opened his West Brom account as the Championship side finally saw off brave Rotherham after extra time, winning 4-3.

Rotherham led in the extra 30 minutes thanks to Tom Pope’s volley, but the Baggies hit back to book their spot in the third round. Craig Beattie’s cross went straight in to give the Baggies the lead but Micky Cummins levelled for the visitors.

Graeme Dorrans put the Baggies back ahead, but Pope levelled almost straight away.

The former Crewe man then put his side in front for the first time in extra time, but Beattie grabbed his second before Cox’s winner.

Tottenham’s fringe players made the most of their chance to shine as Harry Redknapp’s men maintained their perfect start to the season with a thrilling 5-1 win at Doncaster.

Redknapp made seven changes to the side that won 2-1 at West Ham on Sunday, allowing David Bentley, Peter Crouch and Roman Pavlyuchenko the opportunity to show what they could do.

And they did not disappoint as all three scored for the Premier League leaders, with Tom Huddlestone and Jamie O’Hara also scoring.

The only blemish for Spurs was a Martin Woods penalty given for handball against Kevin Prince-Boateng.

Kevin Nolan fired Newcastle into the third round as Geordie hero Lee Clark’s Huddersfield Town side finished on the wrong end of a seven-goal thriller.

The former Bolton midfielder snatched victory seven minutes from time to complete a rousing comeback. The Championship pace-setters, who had not conceded since the opening day of the season, trailed 3-1 two minutes into the second half after Theo Robinson’s double and Jordan Rhodes’ sixth goal of the season had more than cancelled out Danny Guthrie’s opener.

But Geremi and substitute Shola Ameobi, who converted a 64th-minute penalty, drew the home side level and set the stage for Nolan to win it at the death.

Striker Dave Kitson grabbed a sensational extra-time winner for Stoke City after they had been held 0-0 after 90 minutes by League One Leyton Orient.

Bristol City were dumped out by League One Carlisle who won 2-0 at Ashton Gate thanks to goals from Scott Dobie and Gary Madine.

Michael Chopra made it eight for the season as Cardiff beat Bristol Rovers 3-1.

Peter Whittingham and teenager Josh Magennis were also on the mark for the Bluebirds although Steve Elliott’s strike had pulled Rovers back into it briefly.
