Lawwell: Celtic to send strongest possible squad for September 9 clash with Cork City

The proceeds of the friendly — which will be run by the FAI — will go towards to paying off the loan City received to pay the Revenue when the Leeside outfit got into serious financial trouble recently.

While the friendly takes place just a day after a programme of international games, Celtic have vowed to send as “strong a squad as possible” to Leeside.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell said the Bhoys, who played Arsenal in a Champions League qualifier at Parkhead last night, are looking forward to their visit to Leeside. “We are very pleased to be visiting Cork, and we hope that the friendly match will assist Cork City in raising funds to secure the future of the club,’’ he said.

“Celtic FC has always had great support from Cork, and we sincerely hope that this match goes some way to aiding such a fantastic community asset continue their existence.

“While a number of the squad will be on international duty and unable to take part we will be sending as strong a squad as possible and will do all we can to make the match an occasion to remember.’’

City will be releasing ticket details for the game shortly. Celtic’s visit to Leeside means it will be a big few days for soccer in Munster. A day earlier the Republic of Ireland face South Africa at Thomond Park.
