Latics swoop for Irish star McCarthy

WIGAN yesterday completed the signing of Republic of Ireland U21 international midfielder James McCarthy from Hamilton.

Latics swoop for Irish star McCarthy

McCarthy is regarded as one of the hottest prospects in British football and new Latics boss Roberto Martinez is pleased to have snapped him up for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £1.2 million (€1.4m).

“There were several clubs chasing James,” said Martinez. “It is fantastic he has chosen Wigan.

“He had a very difficult decision to make and, fair play to him, he took his time to weigh up all his options, take advice and make his mind up.

“That shows a huge amount of maturity for a boy of his age, but then maturity is probably the one word I would use above all others to describe him.

“He has the ability to become a big player in the future and it is great to have him on board.”

The 18-year-old, who has signed a five-year deal at the JJB Stadium, made his debut for Hamilton aged just 15 and has gone on to make almost 100 league appearances for the club.

Martinez added: “He’s quick, very bright on the ball, can see a pass and I believe he can have a great career in football.

“Now it’s up to us to manage those expectations carefully and nurture a really prodigious talent over the coming months and years.”

For his part, McCarthy revealed he chose Wigan over Wolves because of their style of football, while the management team at the JJB Stadium also made it an attractive proposition.

Hamilton accepted bids from both Premier League clubs earlier this month and the midfielder carefully weighed up his options.

He admitted he was tempted by Wolves but is convinced he made the right decision after speaking with Martinez and his assistant Graeme Jones.

McCarthy worked with Jones at Hamilton and is now looking forward to starting his Wigan career.

“For a Premier League team to come after you is a dream come true,’’ he said.

“I went down to Wolves and had a look about. It was a great place and they treated me well but because I know Graeme and I think Wigan are a great club, I just wanted to come here.

“Speaking to the manager and Graeme Jones, the way they play I think it will suit my style. I just need to keep my head down, work away and try and get in the squad.’’

Latics owner Dave Whelan has vowed the club will do everything they can to make McCarthy feel at home.

“We’re delighted to have him. Too many clubs have been after him for him not to be a quality player.

“He likes Wigan, he likes Roberto, he likes the set-up and he likes how friendly everyone has been to him.

“We are delighted he has so much confidence in us.

“He obviously believes we are a club that promote our youngsters and give them a chance.’’
