Cerny ready to spring in Prague

RADEK CERNY is set to make an emotional return to Slavia Prague for Tottenham’s UEFA Cup clash — this time as first choice ahead of Paul Robinson.

Cerny ready to spring in Prague

Cerny, on loan at Spurs from the Czech Republic side since January 2005, was in the squad last season when the two clubs met but was an unused substitute.

The 33-year-old goalkeeper has the extra motivation of playing for a contract beyond the end of the season and has done little wrong so far in the side.

“I feel good about my form and achievements this year,” said Cerny.

“It’s not about being number one or number two. It is about who is the best at that moment. I’m glad, of course, to be playing a lot recently and I’ll be glad if I’m playing against Slavia.”

Michael Dawson is out with a hamstring problem that may rule him out of the Carling Cup final, but Ledley King travelled.

The Spurs skipper will be assessed on the morning of the game.

“I have not decided, it will depend on the progress of his knee,” boss Juande Ramos said.

Michael Dawson (hamstring) and Kevin Boateng (hamstring) have joined Gilberto (calf), Gareth Bale (foot) and Benoit Assou-Ekotto (knee) on the sidelines.

Elsewhere Gary Megson is calling on his Bolton side to maintain their work ethic when they face Atletico Madrid.

“They are a great set of lads. They are great to work with, great fun to be around and want the best for the club.”

Megson knows they will have to raise their game against the Spanish visitors, fourth in La Liga and pushing for a Champions League slot.

Megson said: “I do not think Atletico will play a defensive game. They will play on the counter attack.

“When we have our strongest team we play in the right manner we are capable of getting good results.”

Defender Gary Cahill and midfielder Matt Taylor are set to make their European bow after arriving in the January transfer window.

Ivan Campo is in the squad and Abdoulaye Meite comes into contention after the African Cup of Nations.

Meanwhile Bayern Munich may be forced to turn to 41-year-old Bernd Dreher to keep goal in tonight’s UEFA Cup game with Aberdeen after the club’s regular keepers were hit by illness and a mysterious shoelace accident.

Bayern number one Oliver Kahn, suffering from flu symptoms, travelled with the Bayern team to Scotland only to be sent back on doctor’s orders.

Michael Rensing, Kahn’s deputy, is doubtful for the round of 32 game after injuring his back while bending to tie his shoelaces.

“A couple of days ago Michael hurt his back while tying his shoes,” coach Ottmar Hitzfeld said. “I’m confident he’ll be able to play, though. In an emergency we’ll find someone to tie his laces for him.”

If Hitzfeld does have to call on Dreher it will be only his third senior match in the last three seasons.

Bayern will be without four other first-team regulars. Franck Ribery is out with a hamstring strain, while fellow midfielder Mark van Bommel has a thigh problem. Centre-back Daniel van Buyten is still recovering from a bout of flu, while 30-year-old full-back Willy Sagnol is being rested.
