Capello eyes Wembley bow after stadium tour

ENGLAND boss Fabio Capello took his four-man coaching team on a tour of Wembley yesterday and pledged to do his utmost to deliver a winning team to “one of world football’s greatest stadiums”.

Having scored for his native Italy under the old Twin Towers in 1973, Capello will get his first taste of action in the new 90,000-all-seater arena on February 6, when England tackle Switzerland in a friendly.

“I felt it was important that my staff had the earliest opportunity to visit Wembley,” he said.

“I wanted them to get a feel for the stadium. We looked at the pitch, which has just been relaid, we toured the dressing rooms and looked at the medical facilities.

“I have to say that we were all greatly impressed with everything we found. Wembley is the spiritual home of football and we are all determined to try and create a successful team for England here.”

Capello is beginning to formulate an idea of his first squad — to be named either at the end of this month or the start of February — and is due to see Michael Owen in action for Newcastle on Saturday at Manchester United.
