Chelsea complete Alves signing from Sevilla for €32m
Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon has been in Madrid this week in order to hold talks with Sevilla vice-president Jose Maria Cruz and their director of sport Ramon Rodriquez Monchi.
It has been reported in Spain that the two clubs have now concurred on a fee of around €32 million (£25million).
Chelsea had hoped to land the talented Brazilian for around £20million but if reports are to be believed, Sevilla have held out for, and received, a more attractive offer.
Jose Mourinho has made no secret of his desire to add a new right-back to his playing ranks, and it does now look as though his wish has been granted with the noticeable capture of Alves.
Spanish newspaper AS have claimed: ‘‘Chelsea general manager Peter Kenyon and Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido came to an agreement Tuesday evening and are awaiting the green light from Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.’’
Meanwhile Mourinho insists Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech is not afraid of returning to the Madejski Stadium for the first time since he suffered a serious head injury there. The 25-year-old will play against Reading in the Barclays Premier League tonight after fully recovering from the setback that almost ended his career.
The Czech Republic international continues to wear protective headgear after his collision with Royals midfielder Stephen Hunt left him with a fractured skull last October.
The Reading player has not spoken with the Chelsea keeper since the accident but Mourinho believes Cech will take the game in his stride.
When asked if he thought Cech would be affected by his return to the stadium, Mourinho replied: “I don’t think so. It’s just a game, a difficult one, but nothing else.”
Mourinho officially welcomed new signing Alex to the club yesterday but said the Brazilian defender would require a further two weeks of intensive training before being considered.
