Lalas backs Becks’ England dream

LOS ANGELES Galaxy general manager Alexi Lalas insists he would “drive him to the airport” if it makes it easier for David Beckham to play for England.

Lalas backs Becks’ England dream

Since his return to the international team, Beckham has been England’s most influential player, creating three of the four goals against Brazil and Estonia.

The 32-year-old is on the brink of leaving European football with Real Madrid on top of the Primera Liga and will move to the United States to join Los Angeles.

Lalas is adamant the club would actively support Beckham rather than stand in his way if he continues to be called up.

Lalas said: “We adhere to FIFA’s rules and regulations regarding the release of any of our players.

“And if David continues to be called up for England we’ll drive him to the airport.

“Let’s be honest, it’s not only an honour for him but also for the Galaxy and the fact we can say one of our players is named in the England squad, I think it’s a wonderful statement on the quality that exists at the Galaxy.”

Lalas also insists the competition in Major League Soccer is high enough to keep Beckham fit and sharp. “Any player that comes over here can continue to develop and I think if David is called back in that England is going to get a player that is physically and mentally sound and in form,” he said.

Lalas also insisted the club would release Beckham for Euro 2008 – should England qualify – despite the competition taking place over three weeks in June, during the MLS season.

Meanwhile Beckham is facing a race against time to be fit for Real Madrid’s crunch Primera Liga match with Real Zaragoza this weekend after picking up an ankle injury while on England duty.

The midfielder appeared to turn his ankle during the first half of England’s 3-0 win over Estonia on Wednesday and was substituted after 68 minutes before undergoing treatment on the problem area.

Madrid announced on their medical bulletin yesterday that Beckham had strained the internal lateral ligament in his left ankle, and that the injury would be monitored over the next 24-48 hours while undergoing medical treatment.
