Deadly Drogba determined to break Spurs scoring drought

Chelsea’s striker Didier Drogba is more concerning with breaking his scoring drought against Tottenham tomorrow than smashing more club records.

The Ivory Coast international took his tally for the season to 30 with his headed equaliser against Valencia in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final at Stamford Bridge.

In doing so he became the first Chelsea player to reach the figure since Kerry Dixon 22 years ago.

But now there are new milestones for the Ivorian to chase as Drogba needs just three goals to beat his best previous season, his last at Marseille, and seven more will take him past the 36 that Dixon managed in that 1984/85 campaign.

Another ten goals will put him in the same bracket as the legendary x Jimmy Greaves – the last Blues player to hit 40 in a season.

But Drogba declared: “That would be difficult. Because we don’t have many more games.

“But I don’t care if I don’t get this objective and we win some more cups. And I want first to score against Tottenham on Saturday because since I have been at Chelsea, I haven’t scored against them.

“I don’t feel good because of this, like I haven’t scored against Man United. That is difficult to accept but that is football.”

His goal against Valencia also gave him much satisfaction on another level.

His final game for Marseille before joining Chelsea was a 2-0 defeat in the UEFA Cup final against the Spanish side.

Drogba added: “The first game against them I lost, the second one we drew but now I hope we beat them because they are a tough team and we have to keep dreaming.

“I am just proud to score 30. Everybody has that feeling at the start of the season but especially I did because I know my body and I know when I have prepared very well and I know what I am able to do.

“I was just left to pray I would prevent injuries. The most important thing when you play 50 games in one season is fitness and don’t be injured.

“Having two up front has created space for me, Sheva (Andriy Shevchenko) or whoever is playing with me. For a striker it is easier to play. You just have to see David Villa last Wednesday. Alone for him it was difficult. When he is playing with Fernando Morientes, he has more space, and he can move. It is easy to understand.”
