NEWCASTLE are determined to ensure midfielder Emre is given a fair trial as he attempts to fight allegations of racism.

Magpies want fair trial as Emre fights racism claims

The Magpies went on to the attack after the Football Association confirmed it is to further investigate claims from Watford’s Al Bangura that he was abused by the 26-year-old Turkey international.

Their actions have been prompted by a series of reports, including one suggesting Bolton striker El-Hadji Diouf had also being involved in a heated exchange with the former Inter Milan star, in the wake of the FA’s decision to charge him with using racially-aggravated words and/or behaviour during his side’s game at Everton on December 30.

Emre has denied the accusations levelled against him after a stormy encounter at Goodison Park and with the support of his club, has vowed to clear his name at a hearing which the FA announced yesterday will take place on Monday, March 19.

However, Newcastle were quick to voice their concerns over his chances of proving his innocence after the latest development.

In a statement, they said:

“Both the club and player have genuine worries that a trial through the media is being conducted before the hearing.

“We are making stringent inquiries into how such stories have come to appear in print and the club would be highly concerned if information is being leaked by any individual or association involved with this ongoing matter.”

Emre was plunged into a race row following angry exchanges with Everton’s Tim Howard, Joleon Lescott and Joseph Yobo after the visitors were awarded a penalty during their 3-0 defeat on Merseyside.

Manager Glenn Roeder later visited the home dressing room in the role of peacemaker, but has repeatedly insisted since that, while what his player said was not pleasant, it was not racist.

However, after requesting evidence from the Everton players involved, the FA charged the Newcastle man.

Emre formally denied the charge and requested a personal hearing.

However, during the weeks since, a series of reports have made further allegations, prompting the FA to intervene.

Emre has not played for the Magpies since damaging a calf muscle during the 2-2 draw with Manchester United at St James’ Park on New Year’s Day.

However, he is back in training and could be involved in the UEFA Cup clash with AZ Alkmaar next Thursday evening.
