Arsene Wenger spent a decade cultivating his standing as one of English football’s most refined individuals but, in the space of eight months, he has metamorphosed into the Premiership’s enfant terrible.

His latest indiscretion, a blazing row with the referee Steve Bennett at half-time on Saturday, could also be his most costly. Wenger’s ire was stoked by a free-kick awarded to Portsmouth for a foul by Gael Clichy which had led to Noe Pamarot scoring.
