Hleb will have all guns blazing for Arsenal
Hleb was not an instant success following his arrival from VfB Stuttgart last summer with a knee injury suffered while on international duty for Belarus in October hindering his progress.
But the 25-year-old improved as he adapted to the Premiership and emerged as an important figure in Arsenal’s charge into the Champions League final.
His creativity gave the Gunners a threat down the right in the 4-5-1 formation Arsene Wenger used for European matches and Gilberto insists there is more to come.
“I think we will see even better performances from Alexander,” the Brazilian World Cup winner told Arsenal’s official website, www.arsenal.com.
“Sometimes when you have a problem, especially when you have just come to the country and you need to adapt to a new system and a new team, you need time ... This season for him will be much, much better. It will be better for him and for us as well.
“He looks stronger, more confident.”
Hleb will be present when Arsenal kick off their Premiership campaign against Aston Villa on Saturday but defender Lauren is not expected back until the end of September at the earliest.
Cameroon international Lauren has been out of action since going under the surgeon’s knife in January to correct a long-term knee problem.
Ashley Cole’s impending departure for Chelsea, who are refusing to meet Arsenal’s £25million asking price for the England star, will force Wenger to step up his search for new defenders.
The Gunners will need a replacement for Cole and, more crucially, have yet to sign a centre back to cover for the injured Philippe Senderos.
