Irish Highbury hero Paddy Galligan dies

HE MAY not have been Arsenal’s most famous Irishman, but there was scarcely a more popular one than Paddy Galligan, Highbury caretaker, who died suddenly last week.

Irish Highbury hero Paddy Galligan dies

The Limerick man was a fixture at Arsenal’s old ground for almost 30 years, and became a friend and confidante to many of the club’s superstars, including captain, Thierry Henry.

When news of his passing reached the first team squad at their pre-season training in Austria, boss Arsene Wenger called the entire group together for a minute’s silence.

In his role as caretaker, Paddy — a passionate Limerick hurling supporter, and uncle of ex-Limerick attacker Mike Galligan — was responsible for dressing rooms, stadium lighting and “the little things that made Highbury special”, a club statement said.

It added: “Paddy was charged with hoisting the flags on match day, changing the ‘next game’ signage around the ground, checking the turnstile count and many other small but significant jobs. He was one of the most familiar and popular faces at Highbury. He was even featured on the opening credits of Match of the Day a few years ago.

“Paddy will be sadly missed and everyone at Arsenal Football Club would like to send their deepest condolences to his family at this distressing time.”

His work with Arsenal concluded with the closure of Highbury, a decision which saddened the Limerick man.
