Fletcher plans to banish the Blues
Although Chelsea may dismiss Tuesday’s visit to Old Trafford as meaningless with their first league crown in 50 years secure, the United camp view things very differently.
The Londoners have cruised 15 points clear in the table and beaten Alex Ferguson’s men in the league and Carling Cup this term to leave United with only the FA Cup to play for.
But the Red Devils know a home win would send them into next season with their confidence soaring.
They also recognise Chelsea will have to cope with the pressure of defending their crown so Fletcher feels there will be far more at stake at Old Trafford than three points.
“We have been hurt by what has happened this year because we see ourselves challenging for trophies and the players will carry that disappointment through the summer,” he said. “The Chelsea game is really important to us. We are looking to get a little psychological edge on them which we can take into the beginning of next season.
“If we can turn in a good performance and get the result we are looking for and then do the same in the FA Cup final, it could well have a bearing on what happens next season.”
