Gudjohnsen aims to assault scoring charts

EIDUR GUDJOHNSEN yesterday vowed he and Chelsea strike partner Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink are ready to commence another fearsome assault on the Premiership’s goalscoring charts.

The Icelandic international, 24 next Sunday, and Holland forward Hasselbaink, 30, were a sensation up front for the Blues last season, amassing a mammoth combined total of 52 goals.

But they have yet to find the net in four games this term, amid wild speculation over the future of both players.

Hasselbaink's move to Barcelona fell through last week when the Spaniards failed to match Chelsea's reported £10m-plus asking price.

And Gudjohnsen, whose pay talks had already stalled and sparked rumours of a departure earlier this summer, was also the subject of a 'tentative enquiry' from Spurs as the transfer deadline neared.

The former Bolton front man believes the reason he and Hasselbaink have failed to sparkle so far is that are yet to reach full match fitness.

He hit 23 goals last term but missed Chelsea's pre-season with a knee injury and illness, while Hasselbaink, who bagged 29, had a summer operation.

Gudjohnsen said: "Everyone expects a lot of us as they look back at last season, when we got many goals. But people at Chelsea know the story this summer.

"I missed a few weeks of pre-season and Jimmy had an operation so we're both lacking a bit of match fitness.

"I will probably get another 90 minutes under my belt for Iceland this week. Then I'll soon be getting back to my best, as will Jimmy."

Gudjohnsen is away with his national team for Saturday's friendly with Hungary, while Hasselbaink is in the Dutch squad starting their Euro 2004 qualification bid against Belarus the same day.

Gudjohnsen also insisted he did not plan to leave Chelsea in the off season, despite the avalanche of Press reports.

"It's not been me putting stories in the papers this summer," he added on Chelsea TV.

"It's all been speculation. I've always said I'm happy at Chelsea.

"They are the club I want to play for and that's about it from my point of view."

Chelsea yesterday tipped their transfer deadline day free signings to form a big part of the future at Stamford Bridge.

Blues boss Claudio Ranieri took advantage of the media frenzy surrounding Hasselbaink's failed move to Barcelona to sign three players on the quiet on Saturday.

He snapped up French right-back Jean Yves Anis, 21, Portuguese centre-back Mauro Oscar Coelho Da Silva and Dutch forward Mbark Boussoufa, both 18. The trio were all out of contract Anis at Rennes, Da Silva at Porto and Boussoufa at Ajax and have signed two-year deals at the club.

Chelsea club secretary David Barnard said: "These are ones for the future. They were earmarked by our system. They were out of contract and the opportunity came up to sign them."

Da Silva's agent disclosed that Chelsea capitalised on a fall-out between the highly-rated defender and one of Porto's youth-team coaches.

Amadeu Paixco said the bust-up prompted Porto to usher out Da Silva, who has represented Portugal at Under 16, U-17 and U-18 level.
