Magpies close in on Johnsen

NEWCASTLE boss Graeme Souness is close to pulling off a deal to bring experienced defender Ronny Johnsen to St James’ Park.

The 35-year-old Norwegian international flew into Tyneside on Monday and trained with the rest of the squad yesterday as the new manager attempted to plug the gap left by Jonathan Woodgate’s departure to Real Madrid.

Johnsen, who has played with distinction for both Manchester United and Aston Villa in the Premiership, has had serious knee problems and is around a fortnight away from match fitness, but he is experienced and crucially out of contract, so can be signed outside of the transfer window.
