Maybe it was the 3-5-2 Ekranas formation or the tempo of European football, but there was something ponderous even pedestrian about City's play, particularly in the opening half.

City's play lacked fluency with any semblance of continuity broken up by either side's propensity in making poor passes. Allied to this was a free-ridden first-half with heavy challenged the order of the evening.
