No mopers at Elland Road, insists Gray

LEEDS caretaker-manager Eddie Gray yesterday insisted there are no mopers at Elland Road.

No mopers at Elland Road, insists Gray

Chief executive and acting chairman Trevor Birch this week indicated any player who did not want to play for the club would be moping around, disruptive and better served plying his trade elsewhere.

With Thursday's opening of the transfer window and Leeds one off the bottom in the Premiership and facing administration, it would not be surprising if there were a few long faces at the club.

But Gray insists that is far from the case, and although rumours persist regarding Mark Viduka, Alan Smith and Paul Robinson, as far as he is concerned, no player has given the slightest hint they want to leave.

The trio are the last of United's 'crown jewels' the others have all been sold off to ease debts which stand at £78million and the club are desperate to find a buyer before a January 19 deadline imposed by creditors.

Leeds face a nervy few weeks, but, as Gray confirmed: "Trevor keeps in touch with me and there's nothing happening right now.

"There's speculation, but I will just consider it as such until I'm told otherwise. It doesn't anger me because I know it's going to happen.

"I'm not even anxious about this transfer window because you know the job you're in and you just get on with it.

"Other people might look at it being an anxious time for the club, but you expect that given the circumstances the club are in.

"If we were sitting here at the top of the table with £80million in the bank, I wouldn't be asked these questions.

"Obviously there's been a lot of build-up to this month, but because it is upon you, you don't get any more anxious. You knew it was going to happen.

"The players take notice, but they know their job is to go and play football.

"But there's been nobody moping about here.

"They're all working very hard and there's no indication from any of them they want to leave."

Gray, though, is clearly hoping the club do not receive an offer they cannot refuse despite the fact Birch has made it plain in the past few weeks that Leeds have no need to sell.

"The most important thing to me is the survival of the club in the Premiership, or in general, the survival of Leeds United," added Gray ahead of Sunday's FA Cup third-round tie at home to Arsenal.

"You hope to have your players with you and we have those players. That's the only way I can look at it.

"We're certainly not in a position where we can afford to lose players, especially your big players."

Birch, meanwhile, has insisted star striker Smith is key to the future of Leeds and is definitely not for sale.

He said: "I know what Alan means to the people here.

"As far as I'm concerned he epitomises everything Leeds United is all about. We're not interested in selling Alan and we're not inviting offers for any player. Nothing has changed on that front."

Birch has also refuted speculation the players confronted him in the wake of his 'moping' comments this week, even though no-one was mentioned by name.

"I never accused any individual of moping," said Birch in the Yorkshire Evening Post. "My comments were taken totally out of context.

"It's absolute nonsense to suggest there has been a bust-up between myself and Alan Smith, or anyone else for that matter. The only time I've spoken to any player is to wish them a happy new year."

Gray welcomes back David Batty the midfielder has completed a one-match ban, but winger Jermaine Pennant, on loan from Arsenal, has been refused permission by the Gunners to play in Sunday's game.
