Larsson could be thrown into the Celtic frontline

CELTIC manager Martin O’Neill is considering throwing Henrik Larsson into the first skirmish of the ‘Battle of Britain’.

Larsson could be thrown into the Celtic frontline

The prolific Swedish striker only returned to full training on Sunday having recovered from a double fracture of the jaw. But with Chris Sutton doubtful with a groin injury, the Celtic boss is set to take a huge risk and partner John Hartson with Larsson against Liverpool in their UEFA Cup quarter-final at Parkhead.

"He's done a few days training since Sunday and he's not feeling too bad," admitted O'Neill. "He's very single-minded.

"He's had a few crunch challenges in terms of using his head and he is feeling very good within himself.

"He is fit and raring to go and ready for action. If he is feeling all right and up to it then I will have to give it serious consideration."

Larsson's return would be timely with Sutton struggling. "He has a groin problem which is a concern," said O'Neill. "We will see how things are tomorrow I've not even thought about the team yet."

News of Larsson's quicker-than-expected return has come at the perfect time with Didier Agathe ruled out for four to six weeks, and the Celtic boss admits his absence is a big setback.

"That's a disappointment," said O'Neill. "Didier Agathe has been sensational for us and particularly brilliant in Europe so he's as big a blow to us than anybody."

O'Neill is still optimistic of reaching the semi-finals, but he has warned his side that Liverpool are better than most teams in Europe.

"They are flying now," he said. "The win against Manchester United in the Worthington Cup final has given them a boost of confidence. They have got everything in their favour. They are not only a great side domestically they have proved themselves in Europe as well.

O'Neill admits his side need to take a lead to Anfield next week. "We are delighted we are here regardless of who we play here," said O'Neill. "What is sure is that we need a bit of luck.

"We have to play as well as we have done in Europe at home in recent years and we have to score to take something down there. They have the calibre of player who are capable of scoring, but we are also capable of scoring away from home.

"I would be delighted if Liverpool didn't score, but on their current form that would be hard to keep them out.

"They are favourites to win the whole competition and we will go in as under-dogs, but we have beaten some quality sides in Celta Vigo, Stuttgart and Blackburn."
