Fortune: win at ’Boro could be defining moment

QUINTON FORTUNE believes Manchester United could go on to reflect on the victory at Middlesbrough as a defining moment in the season.

Fortune: win at ’Boro could be defining moment

The South African full-back claims the feeling in the dressing room is that those types of victories win titles.

That was the message put over by captain Roy Keane immediately after the game.

United are a point clear of Arsenal, who defeated Southampton last night, with Chelsea in third place.

"Keano was saying when he came in that it was the type of result that wins championships, a great result," Fortune said yesterday.

"The gaffer (Alex Ferguson) was saying that Chelsea and Arsenal both went to Middlesbrough and got a result, so it was important for us to do the same.

"And now we have got ourselves into that position at the top we just have to carry on."

Meanwhile, Real Madrid coach Carlos Queiroz is dreaming of a Champions League final with his former club.

Queiroz, who quit as assistant to Alex Ferguson to take over at Real earlier this year, hopes for a reunion with United at the final in Gelsenkirchen in May.at the end of the season.

He is glad his club is paired with Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the Champions League, saying: "The worst opponents would have been Juventus or Manchester United. That would have been worse than Bayern."

Queiroz, speaking in an interview with Marca, admitted what he is really hoping for is a final against United.

"It would be a beautiful dream, fantastic to have Real Madrid and Manchester in the final," he said.

"I want this final."

Queiroz is delighted, meanwhile, with the way fellow former United employee David Beckham has settled in at the Bernabeu.

"His willingness to learn has been tremendous," he said.

"Each game, at every training session he looks, listens and learns something new.

"I am not surprised by his physical and technical qualities playing in the centre even though he has played on the right since he was 16.

"With the status he had it was not easy to say 'now you have to change position' but he was the first one to want to learn a new position.

"His character and willingness have been tremendous. He has not feared from day one the feeling of being lost in a strange country. I am happy with the way he has started."

Royal Antwerp have dismissed Belgian press speculation suggesting they will offer Rio Ferdinand a temporary home while the Manchester United defender sits out his FA ban.

Het Laatste Niews claimed discussions took place between United and their feeder club with a view to farming Ferdinand out to play in the Jupiler League if his suspension did not cover that competition.

However, whilst confirming recent talks with United, secretary Paul Bistiaux said that the former Leeds defender's name was never a topic of conversation.

"It's a joke," Bistiaux stated. "No chance, of course not. We never talked about anything like that.

"We are in a link-up with United they are our partners and friends. But there is no way, Heaven or Earth, that Rio could come to us.

It's the silly season. There's no news so the media produces the news themselves. It's definitely not true. It's a fake story.

"United have never mentioned Rio. It is something to laugh at."

Bistiaux did, however, admit that there could be other arrivals from Old Trafford in the New Year, with youngsters like Mark Lynch, Chris Eagles and possibly imminent Red Devils capture Fang Dongzhuo being linked with loan switches.

"We're talking, as we always do, on and off with Manchester United and the chairman and myself have been in Manchester on St. Stephen's Day," he added.

"We took in the Everton game and had a meeting.

"I cannot say nothing will happen. It's the usual ongoing relationship."
