Thompson, who won seven league titles and two European Cups as a player with Liverpool, was brought back to the club to work under Houllier six years ago.

He assumed control of the first team whilst Houllier recovered from heart surgery in 2001.

Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry said, “Following talks between Rafael Benitez and Phil it has been decided that Phil will leave the club. All the discussions were totally amicable and Phil leaves with our very best wishes for the future.”
