O'Shea gives United plenty of options for Gunners game

JOHN O’SHEA has given Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson a bit of a dilemma ahead of the vital game against Arsenal on Saturday.

O'Shea gives United plenty of options for Gunners game

The Old Trafford boss is trying to work out what the Republic of Ireland player's best position is.

O'Shea was impressive in a defensive midfield role in the 2-0 Worthington Cup victory at Burnley on Tuesday.

He has also slotted in at full-back and central defence during the course of the season. O'Shea looks most comfortable at right-back but did not mind a change of role at Turf Moor.

He said: "The manager just asked me to do a job as we have a lot of players out injured. He told me to sit in front of the back four, get forward when I could, but to defend first.

"I could have made it a lot easier for us at the end of the first half when I had a good chance.

"We knew if we could keep them out for the first 15 minutes of the second half we could go on and create a lot of chances.

"A few weeks ago we were written off totally. Now we have turned things around and we will be looking for a positive result against Arsenal.

"It is going to be huge. We had a fantastic result at the weekend (against Liverpool), a good result at Burnley.

"It will be a Titanic battle that we are all looking forward to and we are going into the game with a lot of confidence."

United are now through to the quarter-finals of the Worthington Cup a competition they won for the one and only time in 1992.

Ryan Giggs is the only member of the current squad to have a winners medal.

That is something 0'Shea is anxious to put right.

"We are definitely going for it," he said. "Hopefully we will get a home draw next.

"We are interested in the cup as some of the lads who are not playing week in, week out, are getting a competitive game."

O'Shea had a hand in the opener against Burnley, threading the ball through to Diego Forlan, who grabbed his third goal in two days and his sixth of the season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer added a second with a thunderous finish after a surging run by Luke Chadwick.

O'Shea said: "Diego showed a great confidence. It was a superb finish after a good little move. He laid it off to me and I put it back in to him.

"The second goal summed Ole up. He has just come on and he is not really into the game but, the first chance he gets, it's a fantastic strike."
