Charlton lose out on Defoe

CHARLTON have been hit by a Jermain Defoe sucker-punch for the second time in 24 hours, as they have missed out on £112,500 after the Premier League unravelled the striker’s move from West Ham to Tottenham.

Charlton lose out on Defoe

Defoe, who scored Spurs' second goal in their 4-2 victory against Charlton on Wednesday night, was a schoolboy at The Valley for six years until quitting for Upton Park in 1999.

His old club are still fuming over the transfer tribunal verdict that awarded them £1.4m plus a 15% sell-on clause for the highly-rated forward. The Addicks were dealt a fresh blow yesterday as the Premier League ruled Bobby Zamora who moved in the opposite direction, from Spurs to West Ham as an extra to Defoe's £6m fee was only valued at £750,000 despite costing Tottenham £1.5m in his move from Brighton just five months previously.

That decision has cost the Addicks 15% of the £750,000 difference in Zamora's value £112,500.

They will now bank just over £800,000 from Defoe's move, paid in instalments.
