Fans’ fury as Glazer plans fresh United bid
Unconfirmed reports suggest Glazer has managed to gain the backing of major investment bank NM Rothschild for his £800million plan and is preparing to make a third approach to the Old Trafford board.
“If Malcolm Glazer comes back to our club with an offer, no matter whether the board accepts it or not, the fans will regard his presence as a hostile one,” said Oliver Houston, spokesman for the influential Shareholders United group.
“It doesn’t matter how he has got the money, the only two ways he could get it back are by either increasing ticket prices or selling Old Trafford and using it on a leaseback basis, both are completely unacceptable.
“David Gill has previously stated that any bid would have to be in the best interests of the future shareholders and supporters of United. We would argue that nothing Glazer can come up with would satisfy that criteria.”
Relations between the Glazer camp and Gill have been strained ever since the United chief executive refused to let the American examine club accounts as he tried to put together an initial approach.
Glazer, who owns a 29.1% stake in the Old Trafford outfit, responded by dumping three members of the United board at the club’s AGM.
Glazer’s next move is waited with interest and there are rumours that he could make formal contact with United within the next seven days.
