Players were injected at Marseille, says Waddle

FORMER England winger Chris Waddle has revealed how Olympique Marseille regularly gave their players stimulants when they won the European Cup in 1993.

“Players were injected all the time at Marseille,” Waddle said.

“The club doctor said the injections would help our recovery after games. I had a couple of injections but they didn't make any difference.”

But he points out Marseille players were regularly tested by French sports ministry officials.

“I don't know what it was but no one ever failed drugs tests and nothing illegal showed up,” he added.

Disgraced former Marseille chairman Bernard Tapie has already dismissed accusations from former Ireland striker Tony Cascarino that players were given injections.

The 88-times capped former Republic of Ireland striker, who scored 61 goals in his two seasons for Marseille after joining the club in 1994 when Waddle had left, said Tapie ordered the injections.

Tapie, a flamboyant former government minister, was removed and sent to prison for fixing a league match days before the club won the 1993 European Cup when they beat AC Milan 1-0.
