Ferguson set for Scotland green light
The Rangers midfielder was substituted during Saturdayâs 5-1 Bank of Scotland Premier League win over Dunfermline with a hamstring injury. The 27-year-old has played an integral role in the current success being enjoyed by the national team under the former Ibrox and Everton boss.
Ferguson expressed concern over his fitness to Gers boss Alex McLeish before the game against the Pars. The Rangers manager has conceded Smith may face an anxious wait for news on the fitness of the former Blackburn player, although it is believed that resting the injury should be enough to ensure Ferguson will be fit.
However, Aberdeen defender Russell Anderson is âhighly unlikelyâ to be involved according to the Pittodrie club after suffering concussion in the 2-2 draw with Motherwell.
Rangers striker Steven Thompson also has an Achilles injury, while Hearts defender Steven Pressley suffered a dead leg in the draw at Falkirk. The Jambos captain nevertheless insists he will be available for the game against Belarus next Saturday at Hampden Park.
Fergusonâs fitness was Smithâs major concern, but McLeish said the player will be available if he is âwrapped in cotton woolâ by Scotlandâs backroom staff before the match.
A Scottish FA spokesman said: âThe squad does not meet up until Tuesday night. It is up to the clubs at this stage, we cannot assess anyone until Tuesday.â
Aberdeen have confirmed Anderson is set to be ruled out. The 26-year-old was taken to hospital after a clash with Motherwell striker Scott McDonald.
A club spokesman said: âFortunately, there is no fracture - but it is concussion.â
