Sugar leaves a sour taste

AS usual, James Lawton, columnist with the London Independent, didn’t mince his words.

“What does chill the blood somewhat,” he wrote last Tuesday, “is the sweeping denouncement of an entire section of humanity in such a crude way.”

Crikey, I thought, Kevin Myers isn’t even safe in the English sports pages. But, no, James was actually writing about Alan Sugar, business tycoon and former chairman of Spurs, who this week labelled footballers as “scum, total scum.”
