IT IS 17 years this week since Alex Ferguson took over as manager of Manchester United.

But it will be a miserable anniversary if the sound of popping corks comes from the visiting fans for tonight's Champions League tie at Old Trafford.

The crucial clash could be the perfect way to mark the anniversary: victory would not only move United to within touching distance of qualification for the knockout phase but it would also appeal to Ferguson's pride if his team can twice beat the side he supported as a boy but felt were unfair to him as a player.
