Lyon go top as Elber goal sinks Bayern

The Brazilian striker, let loose in Munich's Olympic stadium that had been his home, slotted in with his left foot from a tight angle after 53 minutes to settle the tie and put the French champions top of the Group.

Roy Makaay's fourth goal in as many games was not enough for the German champions who had the lion's share of possession, but failed to hold the counter-attacking visitors.

Makaay's strike after 14 minutes cancelled out Lyon's sixth-minute opener from Juninho who beat a flailing Bayern keeper Oliver Kahn with a free kick off the post.

Lyon have seven points with Celtic in second on six in the wake of their 3-1 triumph against RSC Anderlecht.

Inter Milan were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Lokomotiv Moscow in Group B after a 54th minute goal from Dmitry Loskov cancelled out Alvaro Recoba's first-half opener for Inter. Inter remain top of the group on seven points ahead of Dynamo Kiev who lost 1-0 to Arsenal at Highbury.

AS Monaco and Deportivo Coruna set a Champions League record of 11 goals in one match when Monaco won their Group C game 8-3 at the Stade Velodrome. The previous highest aggregate of nine goals in the Champions League was set when Paris St Germain beat Rosenborg of Norway 7-2 on October 24, 2000.

Dado Prso scored four of Monaco’s goals, only the third player to get four in one Champions League match.

Monaco replace Depor at the Group C summit with PSV Eindhoven joining the Galicians on six points after second-half goals by Wilfred Bouma and Arjen Robben helped the Dutch club to a 2-0 win over AEK Athens.

Six minutes after the break Bouma opened the scoring when he headed home a Robben corner kick, and Robben doubled the lead 12 minutes later Juventus booked their place in the knockout phase of the competition after a 0-0 draw at Real Sociedad in their Group D match. The draw, combined with Galatasaray's 3-0 defeat away to Olympiakos, means Juve, who lost out on penalties to Serie A rivals AC Milan in last season's final, cannot finish lower than second in the group.
