Bruce opts to play for Republic
Manchester-born Bruce qualifies to play for both countries through his grandparents.
Bruce, son of manager Steve, was last week selected by Northern Ireland for an U21 clash with Israel. But the 21-year-old has decided his allegiance lies with the Republic of Ireland.
He said: “I’m very flattered that Northern Ireland and the Republic are both showing an interest in me, but I think I’m going to pick the Republic purely because I think they are a better team.
“That’s no disrespect to Northern Ireland. I’ve still got a few things to sort out, but hopefully I will be playing for them soon,” said Bruce.
Meanwhile, Aiden McGeady of Celtic and Drogheda United’s Stephen Bradley are among seven players who have been withdrawn from the Ireland U21 squad which will be contesting the Madeira Tournament on February 14, 15 and 17.
Due to injuries or club commitments manager Don Givens has also seen the withdrawal of Paul McShane (Brighton), Gerard Nash (Ipswich), Mark Yeates (Colchester) and Andy Keogh (Scunthorpe).
Also out is Sheffield Wednesday’s Barry Corr who was due to replace Keogh.
Called up to the squad to face hosts Madeira, Finland and Portugal are Darren O’Dea (Celtic), Richard Keogh (Bristol City), Patrick Cregg (Falkirk), Leon Best (Southampton) and Alan O’Brien (Newcastle).
