Red-hot Elliott looking to gun down Arsenal
The Republic of Ireland starlet, who opened his international account in the World Cup qualifying victory in Cyprus just over two weeks ago, produced a spectacular strike in Sunderland’s 3-2 derby defeat at Newcastle on Sunday.
It was 21-year-old Elliott’s second Premiership goal following a superb finish in the 3-1 home defeat by Manchester United.
He’s now looking to keep his scoring spree going in tonight’s Carling Cup tie.
“It’s good for my confidence to score two in two games. The one I scored against Man United was similar, but this one was probably one of my best.
“But it was very disappointing to lose after we’d shown great character to come from behind twice. But we only have five points and that has to change. We have a massive game at home to Portsmouth on Saturday, but before that we have the cup-tie with Arsenal and we have to pick ourselves up for that.
“It’s another big game. Hopefully we can get a victory and use it as a springboard to go on a run.’
