DAVID BECKHAM would be “devastated” if Sven-Goran Eriksson quit his post — but he insists the Football Association made a mistake in unwittingly increasing the pressure on the Swede with a contract extension offer.

Eriksson has found himself forced into a corner after the FA's offer of a two-year extension until 2008 was leaked into the public domain earlier this season.

The England coach is happy to commit himself to the national team to the end of his current deal, which runs out in 2006.
