New-look Gerrard shining bright as midfield marauder

STEVEN GERRARD was the man who shone brightest in the 170th Merseyside derby in front of the watching England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson.

The Liverpool skipper had a glut of chances and somehow did not find his name on the scoresheet with Everton's Nigel Martyn chiefly responsible.

But the new-look Gerrard, with his marauding from midfield and his energy, drive, desire and skills, is arguably England's most important player as they head for Euro 2004.
