Giggs still dreaming of European glory

RYAN GIGGS wants to savour Champions League glory once more before the curtain closes on his illustrious Manchester United career.

Giggs still dreaming of European glory

Speculation currently surrounds Giggs' future because of the apparent stalemate over a new contract.

Giggs, 31, who has spent the last 14 years with United, has another 18 months to run on his present agreement and is hoping for a contract which will see him end his days at Old Trafford.

But the board have so far been prepared to offer only a one-year extension, which has resulted in the likes of Newcastle and Inter Milan showing an interest.

If Giggs does not get the deal he wants he may have only this season and next to add to his club record collection of medals.

"The one big ambition I have left is to win the European Cup again," said Giggs.

"We have won it once during my time and it can't get any better than it did in 1999 when we won it to clinch the treble.

"But it's clubs who go on to win it again and again who are judged to be the very best in Europe.

"The manager has lowered the age of the squad over the last couple of seasons, and there should be great things to come from the players he has brought in.

"There have been some great teams during my career the teams that won the double in 1994 and 1996 and then the treble team. I think there is potential in the squad now to become the fourth great team and I just hope I can be part of it."

With United already qualified for the knockout stages, manager Alex Ferguson will again ring the changes for their final group D clash against Fenerbahce tomorrow night.

"The boys who played in the Carling Cup against Arsenal on Wednesday will get a chance, said Ferguson. "There is plenty of experience in the back four with Phil Neville, Wes Brown, John O'Shea and Quinton Fortune.

"I'll also take Darren Fletcher, Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo."

Striker Alan Smith may also be included if he recovers from a head injury sustained during the 3-0 win at home to Southampton on Saturday.

But there is definitely no Ruud van Nistelrooy because of a calf injury.

Ferguson is hoping the Holland international will be fit for next Monday's Premiership game at Fulham.
