Hughes’ ambitions driven by past Welch failures
As manager of a side which has now gone 10 games unbeaten stretching back more than 18 months, he knows he is halfway to paradise, halfway through a tough Euro' 2004 qualifying group and with a 100% record still after half the matches.
The 4-0 mauling of an Azerbaijan side who managed a creditable draw away to Serbia and Montenegro, one of Wales' major rivals to reach next summer's finals in Portugal, reinforced Hughes' desire not to repeat the Welsh hobby of failure at the death.
